St Andrews

Only a short fifteen minute drive from the Castle’s gates is the heart of the East Neuk of Fife – St Andrews. World renowned for the famous "Old Course" and the R&A Museum, St Andrews attracts many golfers and tourists all year round.

A wander through the cobbled streets admiring all of the town’s ancient architecture is a must. Various points of interest along your way will include the R&A Golf Museum, the historical buildings of Scotland’s oldest university and the castle remains which overhang the cliffs looking out to the cold waters of the North Sea. Don’t forget to take a wander around the Cathedral’s visitor centre before walking through its ruins and taking in the breath-taking views over the city of St Andrews from the top St Rule’s tower.

If it is a more action-packed day that you are looking for then fear not, there are plenty of activities available to keep the children entertained. Various wind and water sports are available on the award-winning West Sands beach, or attempt putting at the “Himalayas” - beware as it is a lot trickier than what it looks!

Craigtoun Park is also just a two minute drive from the town centre where plenty of fun is guaranteed within its 16.5hectare grounds. Try your luck at crazy golf, take a ride on the miniature railway or hire out your own little rowing boat on their private lake.

If the weather is a bit dull, then the children can always have a fun-filled and educational visit to the St Andrews aquarium or visit the East Sands Leisure Centre, where the kids can play around in the leisure pool, slide down the giant flume and take a wobbly run over the aqua run inflatable. Various other indoor activities are also available: fitness suite; squash courts and snooker.

After an action-packed day, relax and unwind in the evening in one of the many cafes or restaurants available before attending a theatrical performance in the Byre Theatre. For the more daring, why not take one of St Andrews late night historical tours and learn all of the fascinating and eerie stories about the witches of St Andrews.
